“On the far side of the room, opposite the teak boxes, he’d sprinkled azure pigment onto the floor in abstract forms and commingled them with two sentences in teakwood: THEN, ONE MORNING, THEY WERE FOUND DEAD AND HANGED. IT WAS LATER ESTABLISHED THAT THEY WERE DONE TO DEATH BEFORE THEY WERE HUNG. Despite the menacing ring of these quotes from Dr. Ungphakorn’s account, the pigmented shapes turned out to be clouds innocently drifting, based on a random photo that Oranniwesna took on June 24, 2020, the anniversary of Thailand’s transition from absolute to constitutional monarchy. The juxtaposition of two contradicting memories suggests that no recollection holds more validity than others. Our collective memories tend to clash with, complement, and replace one another.”
