Viriya Chotpanyavisut, Flower on the road, 2023, C-print with adhesive backing, 54 × 80 1⁄4″.
“The images in Viriya Chotpanyavisut’s exhibition “The Beginning of Something Else” were saturated with a range of emotions but always evoked nature’s silent scream. Subdued in tone, Chotpanyavisut’s black-and-white and color photographs feature natural elements that seem to resist their visual containment and susurrate with vitality. Dead plant, 2018, for example, shows a flowerpot that appears to disintegrate into invisible particles against an indistinct silver-gray background. Nonetheless, upon closer inspection, one notices almost invisible white roots sneakily crawling atop the pot’s rim. Nature here refuses to be constrained, and its noiseless resistance can be seen more vividly in the wall-covering photomural Over limite, 2017. On a nameless pavement, a tree trunk, bulging with growth, has cracked its concrete planter box to pieces, demonstrating the intense struggle between nature and humans in an urban landscape.”
